Brothers, Sisters, and Friends,
As we head into Labour Day weekend, I want to take a moment to reflect on what this day means for working people here in Alberta and across Canada. Labour Day is more than just the unofficial end of summer—it is a hard-won holiday born out of the struggles and sacrifices of workers who fought for dignity, respect, and fairness on the job.
For us in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Labour Day is a reminder of why unions matter. It reminds us that the eight-hour day, weekends, health and safety standards, and fair wages did not come easily—they were won because workers stood together. Today, we continue that fight, protecting the rights of our members, negotiating strong collective agreements, and ensuring that future generations of electricians can build their careers with security and pride.
This weekend, I encourage every member to take part in Labour Day activities in your community. Whether you are in:
- Edmonton – join the events organized by the Edmonton District Labour Council (EDLC)
- Calgary – take part in celebrations hosted by the Calgary & District Labour Council (CDLC)
- Wood Buffalo / Fort McMurray – connect with the Wood Buffalo District Labour Council (WBDLC)
- Or wherever you reside across Alberta – show your solidarity by standing with working people in your area
These gatherings are a chance to celebrate our achievements, strengthen our movement, and remind the public of the value of unions in building fair communities. Bring your family, connect with fellow members, and proudly show that IBEW 424 is part of the larger labour movement.
On behalf of the Executive Board and staff of Local 424, I wish you and your families a safe, restful, and meaningful Labour Day weekend. Let’s carry forward the spirit of solidarity—not only this weekend, but every day we lace up our boots and go to work.
In solidarity,
Michael A. Reinhart
Business Manager/Financial Secretary
