The Substation Construction Course will familiarize you with the substation/utility environment and prepare you to take a call under the Outside Agreement and become indentured as a Power System Electrician.

The course material will not replace apprenticeship training but will focus on basic knowledge and skills required to work safely and be productive.

You will review the function and requirements of a range of equipment and procedures with emphasis on Ground Grids and personal protective grounding.

The course is 40 hours long, Monday to Friday 8AM to 4PM.

There will be a completion certificate issued upon completion of this course. 

Prerequisites   Journeyman Electrician

The course will cover the following topics:

1.     Introduction

  • Nature of the trade and Utility Marketplace.
  • What is a Substation?  What is the Grid?

2.     Civil Work

  • Site choice and preparation
  • Foundations

3.     Below Grade construction

  • Trenching and excavating
  • Duct and conduit banks
  • Direct burial cable
  • Concrete Cable trays

4.    Ground Grid and P.P.G Concepts

5.     Above Grade

  • Power Circuits
  • Power Equipment
  • Control Circuits
  • Control Equipment
